Dealership clocks up almost five centuries of service

These days, it can be difficult to find a long standing member of staff, with the average person changing jobs 10 to 15 times throughout their careers. However local Vauxhall retailer, Eakin Bros, is celebrating bucking the trend, after the team clocked up an impressive 476 years of service between them.

Customers at the dealership in Maydown are in safe hands when it comes to their motoring needs, with the dealership on Carrakeel Drive harbouring local motoring talent for a fantastic 41 years.

The 21-strong team at the site, which first opened its doors in 1975, boasts almost five centuries of combined service, with two members accruing over 40 years of service; four staff giving over 30 years; five enjoying over 20 years and eight notching up over ten years.

It’s a real family affair at the dealership too, thanks to brothers Leslie and Don McFaul, who have contributed over 80 years to the statistic between them.

Sales Consultant Leslie started at the dealership as a fresh-faced 16 year old school-leaver in March 1971 when the retailer was based at a previous location. He has been with the business all of his working life, starting as a trainee mechanic before working his way up to the position he holds today.

Having seen the site change over the years, Leslie remains one of the sturdy structures at the dealership and is impressed with how far the retailer has come. One thing that never fails to impress him is the innovation surrounding the Vauxhall models that he deals with.

He comments: “I really enjoy working with my brother and the team here, we all have a really strong bond – I suppose you would after such a long time! My long standing service is a testament to the team and the dealership. I have seen massive changes in the technological advances of cars – when I started, there were no radios or heated rear windows! Under the bonnet, technology has advanced leaps and bounds too, and of course, it’s staggering to see how much the showroom has changed over the years.”

Meanwhile Don joined his sibling at Eakin Bros in June 1975 after leaving school and hasn’t looked back. He has witnessed first-hand Vauxhall’s ability to push technological boundaries and celebrates the products they have produced over the years.

Don adds: “We have a great team here at Eakin Bros and I look forward to future years with them all! Having worked for Vauxhall for most of my motoring career, I have been able to see the evolution of its vehicles. Decades ago, a tablet was something you swallowed for a headache, not something you connected to your car! Looking back, the whole motor industry has changed beyond belief – it has been really interesting keeping up with it!”

Director John Eakin comments: “We feel very lucky to have such long-standing members of staff on our team, and I would personally like to thank all of them for their hard work and dedication over the last four decades. Their commitment to our core values of excellent service has meant our customerscan drive away happy; they’re a real asset.

“Now is a really interesting time to be working with the Vauxhall brand, particularly with the launch of the new Mokka X upon us. With the development of new models and technologies all of the time, from electric technology to vehicles such as the VIVA ROCKS (due out next year),the future looks very exciting for Vauxhall.”

“I’d like to encourage any motorists in the area who are looking for a new car, or even those who just need some advice, to come down to the dealership and speak to one of our experts. It’s safe to say that we’ve enough experience between us to know what we’re talking about!”
